Für Information auf Deutsch, siehe unten. Both Steffen Mau and Lisa Pelling have explored a geography of discontent in their books. The book Lütten Klein is about the place where the author and sociologist Steffen Mau grew up in the GDR in the 1970s. After the reunification, the town was hit hard and when Mau returns 30 years after the fall of the Wall, he asks how the local social structure and mentality have changed since he grew up. What is it that makes people so dissatisfied?
Swedish Discontent is based on over three hundred conversations with people in Sweden from Haparanda in the north to Landskrona in the south, from rural Ljusnarsberg to the apartment block in Sandvången. Society has retreated and the local shop has closed. Jobs have become fewer and less secure, and the elderly have to think twice about every krona before spending it to make sure their pensions are enough. Everyday life has become unsafe, the neighbours streetdoor has been blown up and people are afraid to go out after dark.
How are people's everyday lives affected by growing social divisions? What happens to the memory of the place where you grew up when everyday life is characterized by social withdrawal and greater economic insecurity? How can we make it possible to live together, in Sweden and in Germany, and solve the social problems that are often overshadowed today by the debate on immigration? How do we change the geography of discontent?
Steffen Mau is Professor of Macrosociology at Humboldt University in Berlin, where he works on comparative welfare research, social inequality and European integration. He has published extensively on people's attitudes towards the welfare state and on the relationship between welfare state institutions and public support. His work also examines the impact of Europeanisation on social inequality. More information about Lütten klein in English and German.
Lisa Pelling is director of the think tank Arena Idé with special responsibility for democracy and welfare issues. Together with Johanna Lindell, she is the author of The Swedish Discontent (Atlas 2021). Lisa is also an editorial writer for Dagens Arena and a regular columnist for Social Europe. Lisa holds a PhD in political science from the University of Vienna, and has been a political expert at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We plan to record the conversation and disseminate it as a podcast.
