Success model or pitfall? A German report on the Danish Social Democratic Party and its migration policy.
For information in English, see below:
New report out: The Danish Social Democratic Party and its Migration Policy
Often hailed as a potential model for other nations, the asylum and migration policy crafted by the Danish Social Democrats has shaped Denmark's restrictive approach to immigration and integration. However, this new report, authored by Kristina Birke Daniels, Director of FES Nordic Countries, and Jakob Schwörer, Policy Advisor, challenges the notion that this paradigm should serve as a best practice.
Contrary to popular belief, the perceived rightward shift of the Social Democrats has not weakened the radical right but rather bolstered it. Despite the Social Democrats' adoption of restrictive immigration stances, the radical right continues to maintain considerable support.
The Social Democrats' surge in 2019 was attributed not to their stance on immigration but rather to their progressive economic, social, and environmental policies. However, their coalition with liberal-conservative parties has diluted their ability to enact such policies, resulting in a significant loss of public approval.
Furthermore, the consequences of the Social Democrats' migration and integration policies have been devastating for asylum seekers. The unwelcoming societal climate towards immigrants from the Global South could have adverse effects on Denmark's desired influx of skilled professionals. International studies rank Denmark low in openness and friendliness, which has actually deteriorated since 2019.
