Gender & AI at Work

Hilde Nagell

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly common in the workplace, it also brings with it new risks – particularly when it comes to gender equality and the working environment.

AI and Gender

AI is not neutral

Our new analysis paper “Gender & AI at Work” looks at how algorithmic control and AI systems can exacerbate existing inequalities if the gender equality perspective is not considered during their design and implementation.

The paper highlights:
• gender-specific risks to the working environment
• how biases can arise in AI systems
• why monitoring must begin as early as the planning phase
• the crucial role of trade unions in ensuring transparency and co-determination

The analysis builds on discussions with international experts who participated in the workshop “AI-Driven Work: Implications for Women’s Safety, Health, and Equality” in Brussels last year. Drawing on these exchanges, the paper proposes concrete ways to reduce the risks of discrimination and promote responsible AI in the workplace.

As AI continues to transform the future of work, it is crucial to ensure fair, transparent and inclusive technologies. Trade unions have a central role to play in demanding transparency and co-determination when new AI systems are introduced.
