Mapping the Arctic Mayors’ Forum – Local Governments in Arctic Governance and International Discussions

This publication, authored by Iselin Németh Winther from the Fridtjof Nansen Institute, maps out the Arctic Mayors’ Forum (AMF), a pioneering initiative founded in 2019 by 11 northernmost city mayors.

The AMF was established to ensure that local governments and community leaders have a voice in Arctic governance, contributing to sustainable development and resilient communities across the region.

Set against the backdrop of increasing global attention on the Arctic—due to climate change, economic opportunities, and international interest—the AMF bridges local concerns with global discussions. It complements existing governance structures, such as the Arctic Council, by emphasizing the human and community dimensions of the Arctic. This publication highlights the AMF’s potential to address challenges like public health, depopulation, and environmental sustainability while promoting collaboration among municipalities and international actors.

Find out how the Arctic Mayors’ Forum is influencing governance and amplifying local voices in this globally significant region.
