It is high time we listen now!

Covid-19 has uncovered many societal fault lines. The virus hit the elder care sector in many countries especially hard, leading to many deaths and pushing care workers fighting on the corona frontline to the end of their limits. The pandemic has underscored the deficiencies in elder care that haven been warned about and protested by trade unions for years. Precarious working conditionsunderstaffing and underfunding devastatingly undermined the ability to protect the most vulnerable during the corona pandemic: our elderly.

Online conference on May 4th, 09:30h-13:00h

Welcome to the event "Care Workers on the Coronavirus Frontline – translating their experiences into better care and better working conditions". At the event, we will launch a report by FES, Arena Idé and Kommunal on the experience of workers in long-term care during COVID-19. The report highlights the heroic efforts of care workers as well as the importance of trade unions during the pandemic. It underscores existing deficiencies in long-term care and addresses the need for a change in our models of care towards well-funded public care services with good working conditions and sufficient staffing.

The event will be held shortly before the Social Summit in Porto on 7 May, to underline that the problems of care workers are similarly felt across Europe. The event will be an opportunity to hear from, and discuss with, care workers, trade unionists and representatives of European / international institutions.
